CMMI Appraisal Methods

CMMI Appraisals (SCAMPI):

The Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPI) is designed to provide benchmark quality ratings relative to Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMISM) models. It is applicable to a wide range of appraisal usage modes, including both internal process improvement and external capability determinations. SCAMPI satisfies all of the Appraisal Requirements for CMMI (ARC) requirements for a Class A appraisal method and can support the conduct of ISO/IEC 15504 assessments.

As a Class A appraisal method, SCAMPI is an appropriate tool for benchmarking. Sponsors who want to compare an organization's process improvement achievements with other organizations in the industry may have a maturity level determined as part of the appraisal process. Decisions made on the basis of maturity level ratings are only valid if the ratings are based on known criteria. Consequently, contextual information-organizational scope, CMMI model scope, appraisal method type, the identity of the Lead Appraiser and the team-are items for which criteria and guidance are provided within the method to ensure a consistent interpretation within the community.
SCAMPI Class B & C:

SCAMPI Class B and C are the CMMI appraisal methods that provide information about an organization using fewer resources, smaller teams, and less evidence than SCAMPI Class A. These methods are applicable to planning a process improvement approach and to analyzing instances of processes in place in an organization.
The SCAMPI Class B or C can be done when the organization needs to know its degree of readiness for a formal assessment or in case it needs to establish an initial baseline for Process Improvement. It can also be quite helpful if the organization wishes to evaluate a subcontractor as part of its selection and/or qualification process
